Face to face lathe description
The facing lathe is a kind of lathe that can process both ends of a
bar at the same time. Although it may be called a trimming and
centering machine, it can also be used for chamfering, drilling,
countersinking and turning. In most cases, end faces and centering
machines are used to prepare the bar stock for further processing
on the main operating lathe.
Usually, the operator needs to machine one end of the part, remove
the part, and then machine the other end. By processing both ends
of the bar at the same time, the turning time can be cut in half.
However, in addition, by correctly preparing the end face of the
workpiece before turning, the faceting and centering machine can
often completely eliminate subsequent finishing operations. The
centering operation of the machine (creating a precisely positioned
hole during drilling or machining) can also eliminate the need to
machine certain parts of the outer diameter of the workpiece later.
